Dear Gent,
The memorandum on the ruture of Hong Kong University enclosed in your letter to Armstrong,
No. 54147/45 of the 20th February, a copy of which you were good enough to send to Sterndale Bennett, has been read by us with much interest.
It seems to me that you might find it worth while to have a preliminary and informal consultation, about possible ways of implementing the conclusion in the last sentence of the memorandum, with the Regius Professor, E.R. Dodds, who takes a keen interest in the promotion of Anglo-Chinese cultural intercourse and collaboration. The Far Eastern Committee would not, I imagine, be expected to discuss questions of practical implementation, but presumably it will be desired to obtain its endorsement in principle of the conclusion reached in the memorandum, and it might perhaps be helpful in the debate if it could be shown that there are concrete possibilities.
I believe that you already have Dr. Gordon King at hand to give advice, and I only suggest that you might like to consult Professor Dodds too because he undertook a survey for the British Council of the problem of cultural intercourse with China, in 1943, and he has a special insight into the complexities of the problem. I could, if you liked, send you a copy
